He is a prolific composer, having written thousands of songs. He also wrote the novel Quitting Science (2004) under the pen name Cunliffe Merriwether and wrote the preface under his own name.

Bern’s songwriting skills were used in the biopic parody film Walk Hard where he helped write 16 songs for the movie. Many of these songs made the theatrical cut of the film including the Dylanesque “Royal Jelly”, and the melodic “(Have You Heard the News) Dewey Cox Died”. He continues to write songs for films, including Get Him to the Greek and Father’s Day.

Eléonore Josso was born in Paris, France and graduated from Université Panthéon-Sorbonne in 2006. Her work has been included in exhibitions in Italy (Bologna), in France, Paris in 2009 (personal exhibition in Galerie Univ-er, Paris XIe), Var, Senlis, Toulon and in the US, San Francisco, Portland and New York (The Commons Gallery).

Her upcoming collective exhibition will take place in 80 Washington Square East Galleries in July. She lives this year in New York and is currently a Ph D student in art at Sorbonne University and an MFA candidate at NYU, Steinhardt.

Black and white are colors which summarize and “consume” all other ones. By the black/white duality, Éléonore Josso attempts to reach harmony within contrasts.

Let us identify black color, which melts into white, the visible retreating into the invisible, the same way that white, which is rendered black, reveals itself. That is the way the invisible materializes itself and becomes matter.

From photos or sketch taken from her daily life, which are memory aids her to take note of a special atmosphere of a lived situation, an emotion. Then, using oil and acrylics, in drawings and paintings, she creates a space between abstraction and figuration, where usually there is no trace of human presence. Then, Eléonore construct and deconstruct the image, works it in painting until it exists in its entirety.

Come to celebrate the end of restoration work artist Leslie Lowe did over the last weeks in room 1B.

“The Fortunteller in the Garden of the Hashishin” was originally painted by Leslie Lowe in the year 1987.

24 years after, the paintings on the walls needed a fine restoration job and asked by The Carlton Arts Project, she decided to do it herself, conserving that way the originality and importance of the idea.

That well done restoration work is what we are celebrating, along with the Cinco de Mayo, which is also Leslie Lowe’s birthday. Congratulations !

James Zirco Fisher is a Toronto based Illustrator and Soundtrack Composer. His art can be seen monthly in the pages of Rue Morgue Magazine and through his online Creature Captions Contest. His circus soundtrack music can be heard through his website and via his band Squid Lid. The two mediums, art & music, make the full package that is Zirco ( zircocircus.com ).

…”Never before have I been given the opportunity to run free with my creative inspirations as I have in the time I have spent working on The Heart Chamber. Apart from feeling like I’ve been adopted into a family by the loving freak jobs who run the place, the hotel is such a nurturing character in itself it’s impossible not to be inspired to contribute something grand to the place.

Carlton Arms Hotel is the root of evolving honest artistic expression where random people can live within. It not only inspires creative types, it greatly effects the whole visiting experience of NYC in the sense that you are living inside a strange new world right in the heart of the city”.

New room 10A ‘Fuck it! Lets fly!’

Words and Images are our playground as we explore what it means to live and dream. The weightless freedom of dreams is what “Fuck it! Lets Fly!” is all about. The figures’ movement is effortless and the indecipherable text becomes arbitrary as it floats in space…like us. All meaning is lost, as we find joy in the moment of the dream.

The Manhattan Mural Project is the brainchild of Primed Painting Club and Metro State Drawing Club. Both organizations bring together artists that share common love, appreciation and dedication to art. This project was started by Bobby MaGee Lopez of Santa Fe, NM and includes both professional artists and students in the Denver, CO area. The idea is to work as a team to create dynamic and exciting murals in major metropolitan cities across the United States and overseas.

ARTISTS: Bobby MaGee Lopez, Lauren Katz, Kelsey Klene, David Reed, Kate Young, Kate Medlin, Ashley Lowe, Ily Reiling, Amanda Varos, Ashley Frazier, Daniel Wilson, Michelle Schierburg, Kelsey Sletto, Nick Lorenzo, Janelle Anderson, Joe Baasch.
